Honolulu and Hilo

Koko Head Arch

Rayna told me earlier this week she wanted to go hiking and thought trying to find the Koko Head Arch would be a lot of fun.

First of all, I didn’t know we had any arches in Hawaii. Secondly, I’ve been to Arches National Park so I tried to keep my expectations low. But it turns out that when the state has only one arch, maybe, it’s pretty impressive.

Takenoko Sushi

Three weeks ago Takenoko Sushi opened up in Hilo across of Miyo’s. The place seats eight and the fish is fresh. It was good.

We definitely were not prepared for the Uni Nigiri, it’s pretty much a time bomb that goes off when you bite it. That’s no fault to the chef though, we just were not prepared and we were game for anything he fixed up for us.

You can tell if the sushi bar you’re in is good or not by the way the chef prepares his/her tamago. It’s the only thing the chef can actually cook himself, so it is supposed to represent the true talent of that sushi chef. We completely voided that test and went straight for the Toro.

Mauna Kea

The other night I went with a friend for a drive up to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station to take some photos of the stars. Sitting at 9,200 ft. above sea level, the visitor station sits above the clouds, giving a completely uninterrupted view of the stars. The access road to the summit and the visitor station was steep. My car struggled a little bit but we got up there eventually.

The completely unobstructed view of the sky almost feels fake. The camera didn’t do any tricks to make any extra stars appear in the images. In fact, I think there were more stars visible to the naked eye, but my camera just couldn’t pick them up.

Kilauea

Last night we decided last minute to check out Kilauea Crater. The fog started to set in as we got there so we didn’t stay long, but what we did see was quite impressive.

If you’re extremely quiet and you try really hard, you can hear the lava churning in the crater.

Boiling Pots

The other week I went exploring with my friend Lani and decided Boiling Pots was a short enough drive, I didn’t even have to leave the Hilo area.
